NY taxes jolt power producers, highest in country

Taxes on New York state’s electricity and power producers are by far the largest in the nation, according to a new report.
As a result, the state’s electric rates are 66 percent above the national average, according to the report, done by the research arm of The Business Council of New York State Inc. Electricity prices in New York are the third-highest in the nation, behind Hawaii and Connecticut.
Manufacturers alone pay an average of 52 percent more for power than their out-of-state competitors, the report found.
The report, by the Public Policy Institute, blames most of the problem on state and local government taxes. The report calculated 26 percent of the average electricity bill is composed of taxes and fees.....
