Gene's Footnotes

I have never been impressed by the messenger and always inspect the message, which I now understand is not the norm. People prefer to filter out discordant information. As such, I am frequently confronted with, "Where did you hear that...." Well, here you go. If you want an email version, send me an email.

Do you believe this Murphy?

I guess you are caught up with installing socialistic control and regulations, so now you can opine on the New York State's government and finding they are making " short-sighted and rash choices that could damage our area’s long-term economic growth."
Of course, you have no authority to meddle in New York government, but who cares about the Constitution?  As Mr. Obama says, it is just a negative thing.  No good for a fascist.

Do you think we are all stupid?  Actually, you may. Projection is a serious problem.

Perhaps, it is one of the new diseases being announced that will permit the government to send you to a hospital, like if you were "hoarding" gold or food.

Dear Friend,

During these tough economic times, it is a challenge to start a business or provide for a family.  When I was growing small businesses, every day I fought against overly burdensome regulations and a broken tax code.  It has been more frustrating to watch political gamesmanship and indecision in Albany make an already difficult situation worse.

This past week, we saw the New York State Government make some short-sighted and rash choices that could damage our area’s long-term economic growth.

The recently proposed funding cuts to the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) and the continuing failure to resolve the Video Lottery Terminal (VLT) issue, which impacts the New York Racing Association (NYRA) in Saratoga Springs, represent a failure in leadership.  Tough choices must be made, but those cuts cannot come from areas that are central to our economy.

Fighting for Racing in Saratoga

Last week, I called on Governor Patterson to quickly choose a new VLT operator for the Aqueduct Race Track to prevent jeopardizing the Saratoga Race Course summer meet and Travers Stakes.  Right now, NYRA is losing over $1 million a day; money that would otherwise ensure that the Saratoga Race Course remains open for the summer.  Thoroughbred racing in the region brings in over $185 million each year in revenue and is responsible for over 2,500 jobs.  Any disruption in the racing season would be catastrophic to the local economy.  Immediate action is necessary to ensure that once again, we can enjoy racing in Saratoga and the economic benefits it brings.

Protecting the Olympic Regional Development Authority

This year we join Lake Placid in celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice. Just a few months ago we were cheering on our athletes as they competed in the Vancouver Winter Games.  Winter tourism and the activities generated by our training facilities and winter sports drives our economy by bringing thousands of jobs and millions of dollars directly into our communities.

The New York State Senate proposal to cut all funding for ORDA would have a devastating impact on those resources, jeopardizing the Upstate economy – this loss of funding could lead to the closure of the  Olympic training facilities.  In response I have called for all ORDA funding to be restored to ensure that our Upstate economy is a not a victim of these proposals.

Making Government Accountable to the People

Government must be open and transparent.  All too frequently, shady backroom deals are a part of the status quo in our political culture; that must end.  The frustration we all feel during times like these is that too often, important decisions are made in secret, behind closed doors, and away from public sight.

As a founding Member of the new Congressional Transparency Caucus, I will continue to lead by example.  I post my daily schedule online, I put all of my funding requests on my website so you can review them, and I am proud to have visited all 137 towns in the 20th District.  I work for the people of our district and I need to be accountable to them; I view that as a critical part of my job.

As someone who spent years creating jobs in the private sector and spends every day fighting to assist families and small businesses in our district, it baffles me that anyone would play political games on these critical issues and make such poor choices.  As we work together to continue to rebuild our economy, we must cut waste and emphasize our strengths.  Some of these proposed cuts do the exact opposite and would cripple our long term economic prospects.

As I continue to work on behalf of the communities of New York’s 20th District to improve the economy and create jobs, please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance.

  Sincerely,
Scott Murphy
Member of Congress

P.S. -- I recently launched a new facebook page.  Please visit it here and sign up to follow me as I travel around the district and continue to work to rebuild the economy, bring jobs to Upstate New York, and help the middle class.
