Gene's Footnotes

I have never been impressed by the messenger and always inspect the message, which I now understand is not the norm. People prefer to filter out discordant information. As such, I am frequently confronted with, "Where did you hear that...." Well, here you go. If you want an email version, send me an email.

Australia: Global Warming A U.N. Ruse

From Japan Times

(Recall, Japanese scientists call global warming "alchemy.)

This is old stuff, here, but it is always nice to know others pay attention.  Notice the U.N. boss on this ruse says democracy is a bad system for dealing with warming. She recommend Communist China, which is polluted beyond any western standard.

Australia PM advisor says climate change a U.N.-led ruse to create new world order

AFP-JIJI
Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s top business adviser on Friday claimed climate change was a ruse encouraged by the United Nations to create a new authoritarian world order under its control.
Maurice Newman, chairman of the Prime Minister’s Business Advisory Council, said the real agenda was “concentrated political authority. Global warming is the hook.”
In a column for The Australian newspaper to coincide with a visit by U.N. climate chief Christiana Figueres, he added that the world had been “subjected to extravagance from climate catastrophists for close to 50 years.”
“It’s a well-kept secret, but 95 percent of the climate models we are told prove the link between human CO2 emissions and catastrophic global warming have been found, after nearly two decades of temperature stasis, to be in error,” he said, without providing evidence.
Newman, a former chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Corp., is a known climate change skeptic but he went further Friday by accusing the U.N. of being involved in a scam.
“Figueres is on record saying democracy is a poor political system for fighting global warming. Communist China, she says, is the best model,” he wrote.
“This is not about facts or logic. It’s about a new world order under the control of the U.N. It is opposed to capitalism and freedom and has made environmental catastrophism a household topic to achieve its objective.”
Figueres, in charge of getting a global emissions reduction agreement in Paris in December, was in Australia to meet business leaders and the public to discuss practical climate change action.
With its use of coal-fired power and relatively small population, Australia is one of the world’s worst per capita greenhouse gas polluters and has been increasingly isolated over its perceived reluctance to do more to tackle the climate threat.
In an interview with the ABC this week, Figueres said the nation had no option other than to gradually step back from coal — a key economic driver.
Newman said “hopefully, like India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tony Abbott isn’t listening” to the U.N.
But he warned that “having gained so much ground, eco-catastrophists won’t let up.”
“After all, they have captured the U.N. and are extremely well-funded. They have a hugely powerful ally in the White House,” he said.
“They will continue to present the climate change movement as an independent, spontaneous consensus of concerned scientists, politicians and citizens who believe human activity is ‘extremely likely’ to be the dominant cause of global warming.
“And they will keep mobilizing public opinion using fear and appeals to morality.”
According to the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the global mean temperature could rise by up to 4.8 C this century alone, widely seen as a recipe for worse drought, flood and rising seas.
While Australia has a current target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 5 percent below 2000 levels by 2020, it has not yet announced further targetELE

Great White #2

First, in Canada today's Financial Post, Business Section large headline:

U.S. DEFICIT THREAT LOOMS

Flaherty worries shortfall could
have 'serious' impact on Canadian economy

At least someone is paying attention to the U.S. collapse.  Canada is working to survive our insanity. They seem to think there are only two things that we can do. Either alone or together:  stop spending or tax less. Jerks. There is the Obama option:  raise taxes, cost of government, borrowing, transfers to friends, and spending.  There was a piece reporting on John Hussman's crazy notion that Geithner and Bernanke are premature in their "mission accomplished" events. He is a Maryland economist with a fund.

The paper reports that in 2012 the U.S. deficit will be more than 100 percent of the GDP.  Canada's will max out 2010 at 79%. Of course, the proposed socialist taxes on everything will kick in about that time, as well.

I am trying to figure out when to leave Toronto, an inter-storm exit.  I see Europe is also being blanketed by snow.  From a climatological perspective, we remain in the scientifically settled Gore Effect.

I think we were in an El Nino year, but haven't checked.  That, coupled with no sun spots this year, until recently, Florida will likely have a freeze or tow, so buy orange juice.  Or, its futures.

Rod sent in a piece from the National Post, again Canadian, from the Deniers series.  I will quote a bit.  You can hit the title to get to the full story.  This piece will go along with what I stated, as a non scientist, long ago.  Once the cat is out of the bag, those socientists who want to keep their reputations will become, if not deniers, then insipid doubters. Of course, this article is over two years old, so the cat has been wiggling out for some time.

Within the article are the links to other parts of the series.  Again, recall this is over two years old.

Allegre's second thoughts

Claude Allegre, one of France's leading socialists and among her most celebrated scientists, was among the first to sound the alarm about the dangers of global warming.

BY NATIONAL POSTMARCH 6, 2007

Claude Allegre, one of France's leading socialists and among her most celebrated scientists, was among the first to sound the alarm about the dangers of global warming.
"By burning fossil fuels, man increased the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which, for example, has raised the global mean temperature by half a degree in the last century," Dr. Allegre, a renowned geochemist, wrote 20 years ago in Cles pour la geologie.." Fifteen years ago, Dr. Allegre was among the 1500 prominent scientists who signed "World Scientists' Warning to Humanity," a highly publicized letter stressing that global warming's "potential risks are very great" and demanding a new caring ethic that recognizes the globe's fragility in order to stave off "spirals of environmental decline, poverty, and unrest, leading to social, economic and environmental collapse."

In the 1980s and early 1990s, when concern about global warming was in its infancy, little was known about the mechanics of how it could occur, or the consequences that could befall us. Since then, governments throughout the western world and bodies such as the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have commissioned billions of dollars worth of research by thousands of scientists. With a wealth of data now in, Dr. Allegre has recanted his views. To his surprise, the many climate models and studies failed dismally in establishing a man-made cause of catastrophic global warming. Meanwhile, increasing evidence indicates that most of the warming comes of natural phenomena. Dr. Allegre now sees global warming as over-hyped and an environmental concern of second rank.

His break with what he now sees as environmental cant on climate change came in September, in an article entitled "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" in l' Express, the French weekly. His article cited evidence that Antarctica is gaining ice and that Kilimanjaro's retreating snow caps, among other global-warming concerns, come from natural causes. "The cause of this climate change is unknown," he states matter of factly. There is no basis for saying, as most do, that the "science is settled."...

Death of Global Warming

As I have been saying for a long time, the Global Warming religion was founded on poor data.  Finally, real "peers" got their hands on the underlying data behind the holy hockey stick, or as the article puts is the Hokey Hockey Stick, and we find the poor data and errors were on top of an active fraud.

This is why the originators of the religion refused to reveal their data, saying it took a long time to gather, so why share it! This is the long-touted peer-reviewed science.

Below is page one of an article from England's The Register. Just click on the headline, if you really "believe" in the hockey pocus.

Essentially, the underlying data behind the IPCC finding and billions of dollars of centralizing government was based on data from 12 trees, selected to show warming. There were 34 other trees that didn't show warming. In all there were 252 tree samples taken.

This is criminal fraud. Billions have been spent and are being carved out for this silly notion. Our government is poised to use the fraud. Any politician who moves ahead with more government control based on this myth is either a liar or stupid, a distinction not relevant to fraud.

If you recall, I documented a long time ago the Mann hockey stick was based on mathematical error. Now, we find it is also based on fraudulent data.

This is you UN and Al Gore at work to pull in billions. This is Obama's cap and trade and control of the auto industry. It is all based on a pretext and only the truly stupid can't see that.  There is no other way to put it; this is no longer a subject of reasonable discourse.

Treemometers: A new scientific scandal

If a peer review fails in the woods...
A scientific scandal is casting a shadow over a number of recent peer-reviewed climate papers.
At least eight papers purporting to reconstruct the historical temperature record times may need to be revisited, with significant implications for contemporary climate studies, the basis of the IPCC's assessments. A number of these involve senior climatologists at the British climate research centre CRU at the University East Anglia. In every case, peer review failed to pick up the errors.
At issue is the use of tree rings as a temperature proxy, or dendrochronology. Using statistical techniques, researchers take the ring data to create a "reconstruction" of historical temperature anomalies. But trees are a highly controversial indicator of temperature, since the rings principally record Co2, and also record humidity, rainfall, nutrient intake and other local factors.
Picking a temperature signal out of all this noise is problematic, and a dendrochronology can differ significantly from instrumented data. In dendro jargon, this disparity is called "divergence". The process of creating a raw data set also involves a selective use of samples - a choice open to a scientist's biases.
Yet none of this has stopped paleoclimataologists from making bold claims using tree ring data.
In particular, since 2000, a large number of peer-reviewed climate papers have incorporated data from trees at the Yamal Peninsula in Siberia. This dataset gained favour, curiously superseding a newer and larger data set from nearby. The older Yamal trees indicated pronounced and dramatic uptick in temperatures.
How could this be? Scientists have ensured much of the measurement data used in the reconstructions remains a secret - failing to fulfill procedures to archive the raw data. Without the raw data, other scientists could not reproduce the results. The most prestigious peer reviewed journals, including Nature and Science, were reluctant to demand the data from contributors. Until now, that is.
At the insistence of editors of the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions B the data has leaked into the open - and Yamal's mystery is no more.
From this we know that the Yamal data set uses just 12 trees from a larger set to produce its dramatic recent trend. Yet many more were cored, and a larger data set (of 34) from the vicinity shows no dramatic recent warming, and warmer temperatures in the middle ages.
In all there are 252 cores in the CRU Yamal data set, of which ten were alive 1990. All 12 cores selected show strong growth since the mid-19th century. The implication is clear: the dozen were cherry-picked.
(This oversimplifies the story somewhat: for more detail, read this fascinating narrative by blogger BishopHill here.)
Controversy has been raging since 1995, when an explosive paper by Keith Briffa at the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia asserted that that the medieval warm period was actually really cold, and recent warming is unusually warm. Both archaeology and the historical accounts, Briffa was declaring, were bunk. Briffa relied on just three cores from Siberia to demonstrate this.
Three years later Nature published a paper by Mann, Bradley and Hughes based on temperature reconstructions which showed something similar: warmer now, cooler then. With Briffa and Mann as chapter editors of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), this distinctive pattern became emblematic - the "Logo of Global Warming"....
